100% Meunier Champagne: the star grape of the Marne Valley

For decades, Meunier played a secondary role. Confined to blends, rarely named on labels, it was the grape no one talked about. That era is over: a new generation of winemakers and houses are now making it the hero of sought-after single-varietal cuvées. A portrait of a grape that deserved better than its reputation.

Where does its name come from?

Meunier owes its name to the fine white down that covers the underside of its leaves, as if dusted with flour — the “miller’s” grape. It is a black grape with white juice, a cousin of Pinot Noir, with which it shares the family but not the temperament.

The grape of the Marne Valley

If Chardonnay reigns over the Côte des Blancs and Pinot Noir over the Montagne de Reims, the Marne Valley is the kingdom of Meunier. This is no accident: the valley, more exposed to spring frosts, needs a grape variety that buds late and resists the vagaries of the climate. Meunier is that grape — rustic, consistent, adapted to the clay-limestone soils of the hillsides bordering the river.

At OTO, a house rooted in the Marne Valley, working with Meunier is not a marketing choice: it is an obvious reflection of the terroir.

What Meunier brings to the glass

Where Chardonnay stretches and Pinot Noir structures, Meunier seduces. Its characteristics:

  • aromas of fresh red and yellow fruits — strawberry, raspberry, mirabelle plum, ripe apple;
  • a natural roundness, a supple and fleshy palate;
  • immediate expressiveness: Meunier doesn't need ten years in the cellar to reveal itself.

It is the grape of immediate pleasure, of assumed indulgence. What long earned it the disdain of purists — "it ages badly," they said — now makes it a success: in a world that drinks its Champagnes younger, its brilliant fruit is a major asset.

Meunier Rosé: indulgence in its purest form

If there's one area where Meunier excels, it's rosé. Its red fruit palette finds its most natural expression in this format.

Our Rosé is made from a single grape variety, 100% Meunier: fresh strawberry and raspberry on the nose, a floral touch, a supple palate supported by fine bubbles and a slightly crisp finish. A champagne for pleasure, equally at home as an aperitif or at Sunday brunch — the very definition of what Meunier can do.

How to serve it

Meunier doesn't like being too cold, which stifles its fruit: aim for 9-10 °C. At the table, it pairs wonderfully with convivial cuisine: fine charcuterie, savory tarts, Mediterranean cuisine, red fruit desserts for rosé. It's a champagne to be shared rather than contemplated.

A word from the house

Rehabilitating Meunier means telling the story of the Marne Valley as it is: a terroir of character, long discreet, which has nothing to envy to its prestigious neighbors. This is exactly the spirit of OTO — finding the right balance, without excess.
